Evolution happened.
The story of Adam and Eve is just that- a story. The Bible contains multiple parables that teach certain morals and lessons. The story of Adam and Eve is one such parable. And if someone absolutely refuses to believe in evolution because of the Bible, then kindly point them to the teachings of John Paul II. He believed in evolution, and he was the Pope!

Well, this place certainly has been active in the time that I've been gone. Good for you. But a question. If you accept the story of Adam and Eve as a parable, doesn't that mean that the Original Sin deal never happened, and that mankind isn't supposed to try and get back to heaven?
Although, I can imagine that when God sent down Adam and Eve, he sent them in the form of the primate-like creatures he had been evolving over time for that very purpose. After all, in heaven we will not be in the same form as we are on this Earth -- I think both of our texts agree upon that, even if Muslims don't believe in the original sin that sent us down to begin with.
For us, it is rather that God forgave the two humans and sent them down on earth as a trial of their devotion, a challenge to bring good to the world, not as a punishment.
Anyways, here's a funny webcomic on the matter. http://xkcd.com/154/
Okay, yes there is Original Sin. No I do not believe there was ever Adam and Eve. I mean, I'm not God, so I really have no idea what happened in the beginning of time except for that organisms evolved.
However:
I think what exactly happened is a moot point. The reason behind the story of Adam and Eve is to point out that we do indeed have Original Sin. And even if we try hard not to, or become the Pope, or become a saint, we will sin.
The point of the story is to show that God loves us and is willing to give us everything we need and want in His power. In exchange for this amazing world, He asks that we do one thing: do not eat the fruit of sin.
But even though Eve and Adam had everything, they still disobeyed God and sinned, and were punished.
And even though God gave us everything in this world, we still disobey Him and if we do not repent, we will be punished.
So really, the story of Adam and Eve isn't about creation and the beginning of time. It's about man's weakness towards sin, and warns people to follow God's rules. Nobody said it would be easy, but obeying and sincerely repenting is the key to heaven.
Oh, huh. I've never heard that before -- belief in Original Sin without the belief that there ever was an Adam and Eve. Interesting.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Original Sin in Christianity was the sin of Adam and Eve from eating the forbidden fruit, which sent them from Heaven, and was inherited by all of humanity.
It's an actual sin, that is. Not just the idea that man is falliable, because every society since human existence has understood *this.*
And as such, is it possible that from birth, we could be tainted from the original sin of our ancient ancestors Adam and Eve if they never existed in the first place?
Is it even possible at all, that we should even have an Original Sin, such that were we to be the unfortunate victims of a miscarriage and die within seconds of birth, that we should go to Hell?
Wikipedia says it best:
"Roman Catholic teaching regards original sin as the general condition of sinfulness (lack of holiness) into which human beings are born, distinct from the actual sins that a person commits. It explicitly states that original sin does not have the character of a personal fault in any of Adam's descendants."
"Adam's descendants" meaning "mankind." So yes, original sin is an actual sin. Will it send you to Hell? No.
